Well I would first play around and try some tutorials. First creat a new image, and make what you wish. You might be using penguins alot so here is how to cut them out easily.

Open the image go to Layers>transparency>Add alpha channel. Then open gimps main screen and click the wand tool then click on the blue backround and right click edit cut. Then you have your penguin pretty well cut.

How do i use downloaded fonts and brushes on GIMP?

The GIMP help on Mini clip answered this but it didnt work.
